Why Choose a Niche as a Virtual Assistant

niche (adjective)
> denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialised section of the population.

As a Virtual Assistant, I chose to only work with health & wellness businesses. Choosing a niche played a significant part in the rapid success of The Healthy VA (and my personal development). Here's why:

  1. I was able to ‘hone in’ on specific tools and skills required to meet the needs of the industry

  2. I noticed similar patterns and challenges which health business owners experience, and therefore offer a targeted solution (and eventually provide strategic advice and increase my hourly rate)

  3. I attracted clients within the industry faster, through targeted marketing, as well as word of mouth recommendations & Facebook group mentions

  4. Targeted marketing meant I quickly dominated the first page of Google for keywords ‘Virtual Assistant, Health’

By choosing a niche, you become an 'expert' in your field and can provide specific, problem-solving, solutions for your clients that are clear and concise.

Having achieved expert status in one industry or service, can also help to expand into other niches in the future.

The best advice I can give to a freelancer is to focus on one area that they believe they can become the best in the world in. As opposed to going broad and spreading one’s attention, they should go deep in one area.  Ideally, they will become the person people turn to, whether it be for social media, WordPress development, or any other area. Once a person or company is recognised as being the best in a specific area, they then have more leeway to expand into new areas.’
